What is a root canal? How do you know if you need a root canal?

A root canal is a treatment used to save and/or repair a badly decayed tooth or an infected tooth. Inside of your tooth is a hard layer called dentin. Beneath the dentin layer is a soft tissue called the pulp. This contains blood vessels and nerves that help the root grow. After the tooth is fully developed, it can survive without the pulp as the tissue around the tooth helps nourish it.

When a root canal is performed, the pulp and nerve are removed from the tooth, and the inside of the tooth is filled after it is carefully disinfected. The tooth is filled and carefully sealed with a rubber-like material to prevent internal infection.

After the root canal is performed, usually a crown or filling is added for further protection. After everything is said and done, the tooth can further function like any other tooth!

When you find out that you need a root canal don’t panic. These procedures are much less painful than they used to be. Each year dentists offer millions of root canal procedures helping to relieve pain for their patients. The procedure is very similar to a routine filling and is usually completes in one or two visits. With our help, you will be back to yourself, smiling in no time.

Patients are able to receive anesthesia to reduce the amount of pain. Following the procedure, there may be a few days of mild discomfort. You may be numb for a couple of hours after the procedure, so you may be able to return back to work or school after.

Signs You May Need a Root Canal

  • Extreme pain when eating or when pressure is applied to an area within your mouth
  • Teeth pain and sensitivity that occurs when a hot or cold stimuli is applied to an area and remains after the removal of the stimuli
  • A small pimple-like bump on the gums near the area of the mouth that is experiencing pain
  • Darkening of the tooth in pain

Some patients might be wondering if there are any alternatives to root canal procedures. A root canal is the treatment of choice when it comes to saving the tooth. An alternative to a root canal is tooth extraction and replacing the tooth with an implant. However, these procedures generally cost the patient more and take a longer time to treat the affected tooth. Each patient is different which means our dentist will evaluate our patients on a case by case basis to determine the best course of action to save a tooth.
